Japan prepares for era of over 400,000 international students

The Student Support Center will host special lectures in Tokyo and Kyoto to discuss strategies for supporting international students as Japan approaches an era where the number of foreign students exceeds 400,000. The events, scheduled for November 25 in Tokyo and December 7 in Kyoto, aim to address the challenges of maintaining educational quality and international competitiveness amidst a declining domestic youth population.

Speakers will include representatives from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES), and the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO). Discussions will focus on optimizing the entire student lifecycle, from academic and living environments to post-graduation employment and settlement support.

In a related effort to promote global engagement, Kyoto University recently conducted its ‘Recommendation for Study Abroad’ event. The initiative, which saw approximately 250 students participate, provided information on scholarships—including the Kyoto University Tadao Ando International Scholarship—and short-term programs to encourage overseas learning opportunities.
