Kazuo Yana resigns as Agriculture Minister amid budget and election scandals

Kazuo Yana has resigned as Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries following a series of controversies. The resignation follows Yana's admission that he suggested cutting road budgets for municipalities that did not support him during the previous election.

In addition to the budget remarks, Yana faces allegations of violating the Public Offices Election Act. These include claims of providing free shuttle buses to supporters and allegedly paying staff to make phone calls requesting votes during the 2024 House of Representatives election.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has apologized for the situation, stating she accepts responsibility for the appointment. Takaichi also criticized Yana's budget-related comments as ‘uncool’ (dasai). Opposition members, including Kimiyo Tsujimoto of the Constitutional Democratic Party, have demanded that Yana appear before the Diet to provide a full explanation.

Shin Takebe has been appointed as the new Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to replace Yana.
