Japan Prime Minister Takashi announces two-year 1% food tax cut

Prime Minister Takashi said the government will reduce the consumption tax on food and drink from the current 8 % to 1 % for a two‑year period starting in April 2027. The move is intended to ease household spending amid rising prices.

Agriculture Minister Suzuki said the ministry will monitor the policy’s effect on farmers and the restaurant sector and is preparing support measures. He also briefed on disaster relief efforts and a new pest‑control task force for invasive insects affecting trees and crops.
