Japan private university tuition comparison shows significant cost disparities
A comparison of tuition fees at various Japanese private universities reveals significant disparities across different faculties and institutions.
In the field of dentistry, which requires a six-year program, costs are substantially higher than the average for four-year degrees. For students entering in 2026, Tokyo Dental College has the highest estimated total tuition at 31.9 million yen. Nippon Dental University follows closely with a total of 31.38 million yen, while Showa University's dentistry program is estimated at 27 million yen.
Regarding general four-year undergraduate programs, a survey of 29 prominent private universities shows a maximum difference of approximately 2.3 million yen in total tuition. The most affordable institutions among the studied group are the ‘Nitto Komasen’ universities, led by Nihon University with 4.26 million yen, followed by Toyo, Senshu, and Komazawa universities. Conversely, International Christian University (ICU) recorded the highest total at 6.555 million yen.
