Japan private university tuition shows 2.3 million yen gap

A recent survey by Popcorn Co., Ltd. reveals significant disparities in tuition costs among 29 prominent private universities in Japan. Comparing four-year total costs for law faculties, the study found a gap of approximately 2.3 million yen between the most and least expensive institutions.

Nihon University was identified as having the lowest total tuition at 4.26 million yen, followed by Toyo University and Senshu University. In contrast, International Christian University (ICU) recorded the highest cost at 6.555 million yen. Among the prestigious GMARCH group, Hosei University was the most affordable, while Keio University reached 5.4 million yen.

Beyond university costs, families face unexpected financial pressures regarding private secondary education. While public subsidies for high school tuition have increased, parents report significant out-of-pocket expenses for uniforms, digital devices, and specialized programs. For instance, one family reported that school-mandated uniforms cost 170,000 yen, and an optional overseas training program required 500,000 yen, highlighting the importance of calculating total educational expenditures rather than focusing solely on base tuition.
