Japan promotes energy-saving home renovations via tax incentives

The Japanese government is actively promoting energy-saving renovations to improve housing performance and reduce energy consumption. These upgrades, which include enhancing insulation and installing high-efficiency equipment, aim to increase home comfort, lower utility costs, and mitigate health risks such as heat shock and allergies caused by condensation.

To support these improvements, various financial incentives are available, including the ‘Reform Promotion Tax System’. This system allows for income tax deductions of up to 600,000 to 800,000 yen, or reductions in fixed asset taxes by one-third to two-thirds, depending on the type of work performed. Eligible projects include earthquake resistance upgrades, energy-saving improvements, barrier-free modifications, and long-life housing enhancements. Additionally, specialized financing options like the ‘Green Reform Loan’ are available to assist homeowners in maintaining and increasing the value of their properties.
