Japan proposes record defense budget amid regional tensions

Japan is planning a record-breaking defense budget of approximately 8.9 trillion yen (48 billion euros) for the upcoming fiscal year. This move, part of a strategic overhaul led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, marks a significant shift from Japan's post-WWII pacifist stance and includes measures such as reinforcing defense alliances and deploying missile launchers on peripheral islands.

North Korea has reacted sharply to the announcement. The state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) accused Tokyo of preparing for a 'war of aggression' and warned that the increased military spending could destabilize the region and the world. Similarly, China has expressed concern, characterizing Japan's actions as a form of 'new militarism.'

In contrast to Tokyo's firm stance, the United States is pursuing a different diplomatic approach. President Donald Trump has reduced the scale of joint military exercises with South Korea and expressed intentions to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un later this year.
