Japan provides USD 3.15 million in medical equipment to Bhutan

Bhutan has deployed approximately USD 3.15 million (Nu 300 million) worth of medical equipment across six eastern districts to enhance healthcare services. The initiative, provided by the Government of Japan, marks 40 years of diplomatic relations between Bhutan and Japan.

The project, implemented by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, includes more than 30 types of medical devices, such as digital X-ray machines, ultrasound machines, and infant incubators. The equipment has been distributed to district hospitals in Lhuentse, Trashigang, Trashi Yangtse, Pema Gatshel, and Samdrup Jongkhar, as well as the Mongar Eastern Regional Referral Hospital.

To ensure long-term effectiveness, the project includes capacity-building measures. Dr. Mimi Lhamu Mynak, President of the National Medical Services, stated that most districts already have trained personnel to operate the equipment. For facilities requiring more manpower, approval has been secured from the Royal Civil Service Commission to recruit and train additional staff.
