Japan quake kills 13, triggers mall collapse in Kumamoto

A magnitude‑7.1 earthquake struck the island of Kyushu on 28 July 2026, with its epicentre in Kumamoto Prefecture. The shaking caused the partial collapse of the Aeon Mall in Kumamoto and a secondary gas explosion, trapping dozens of people. Official counts confirm 13 deaths and more than 100 injuries, with around ten individuals still missing.

Infrastructure damage was extensive: 48,000 households lost electricity, Shinkansen services were halted, and Kumamoto Airport was closed. Prime Minister Sani Takahashi mobilised over 3,600 Self‑Defense Forces for rescue and recovery. A tsunami warning was issued but later withdrawn, and the Nuclear Regulation Authority reported no anomalies at nearby power plants. Aftershocks continue to pose a risk.

Rescue teams are working through the night to reach survivors trapped under rubble, while hospitals treat the injured and authorities assess the full extent of the disaster.
