Japan quake prompts warning from Croatia's seismology chief Krešimir Kuk

A powerful earthquake struck Japan, a nation situated on a highly complex tectonic zone where four lithospheric plates interact. Krešimir Kuk, head of Croatia's Seismological Service, said Japan is one of the most intricate seismic areas worldwide and that about 10% of all magnitude‑6+ earthquakes occur there. He warned that aftershocks are expected; while subsequent tremors are generally weaker, they remain hazardous and prompted evacuations of many residents.

Kuk also noted two minor quakes recorded in Bosnia and Herzegovina – a magnitude‑3 event south of Sarajevo and a magnitude‑2.7 tremor near Stoc – and explained that the Adriatic region experiences its own seismic activity due to a micro‑plate under the Dinarides. He dismissed any connection between climate change and earthquakes, emphasizing that seismic events originate deep within the Earth.
