Japan ranking highlights top regions for dual-location living
A new ranking identifies the most recommended regions in Japan for dual-location living, a lifestyle increasingly adopted by individuals seeking to balance urban convenience with natural environments. This trend, often referred to as being a ‘dualer,’ has seen growth due to the rise of remote work and shifting lifestyle preferences among those in their 50s and 60s.
Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture holds the top position, favored for its proximity to Tokyo via the Hokuriku Shinkansen and its highland resort atmosphere. Atami in Shizuoka Prefecture ranks second, noted for its hot springs and easy access to the Shinkansen. Other highly ranked locations include Hokuto in Yamanashi, Tateyama in Chiba, and Odawara in Kanagawa, which offer various combinations of coastal, mountainous, or resort-style living.
While these areas offer significant lifestyle benefits, considerations such as seasonal temperature extremes, reliance on vehicles in rural areas, and local topography remain important factors for prospective residents.
