Japan ranks first in OECD science, math, and reading scores

Japan has ranked first among OECD member nations in reading, mathematics, and science according to the 2025 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) results. This marks the first time since the program began in 2000 that Japan has held the top position in all three core subjects among the 38 OECD member countries.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Kihara attributed the achievement to the daily efforts of students, schools, and parents, noting that the results demonstrate Japan's education standards remain at a top international level. However, the data also revealed challenges common to many OECD nations, including a decline in average reading scores and an increase in the proportion of low-scoring students.

While Japan ranked first among OECD members, it placed fourth globally in reading and fifth in mathematics and science when including non-OECD participants. In the global rankings, Singapore led in reading, while regions in China, Macau, and Taiwan showed top performance in mathematics and science.
