Japan ranks lowest in G7 for gender equality

According to the 2026 Global Gender Gap Report released by the World Economic Forum, Japan ranks 117th out of 145 surveyed countries. Despite the historic appointment of Sanae Takaichi as Japan’s first female Prime Minister, which improved political participation metrics, the nation remains at the bottom of the G7 in terms of gender equality.

Japan’s overall achievement rate stands at 67.0%, a slight increase from the previous year. While the country shows near parity in education and health, it continues to lag significantly in the political and economic sectors. The political achievement rate rose to 10.5%, but remains the lowest among the four measured categories. Economic equality has seen a slight decline to 60.9%, reflecting ongoing challenges in female representation within corporate management and board positions.

Globally, Iceland maintains the top position with a 93.0% achievement rate. In comparison, the United States ranks 47th, China 96th, and South Korea 101st.
