Japan recruitment trends show earlier student job hunting and focus on practical training

Recent surveys in Japan highlight shifting trends in new graduate recruitment and training. According to data from Gakujo regarding the 2027 graduate class, approximately 60% of students begin job hunting activities, including internships, before the end of their third year in June. There is a notable trend toward earlier engagement, with 15% of students starting as early as their first or second year. The data also reveals a growing polarization, as a significant number of students wait until the official release of recruitment activities in March to begin their search.

Regarding professional development, a survey by Hajimari of 111 HR professionals focused on 2026 new graduate training. The most significant area for both improvement and success was the connection between training programs and actual post-assignment duties. While 52.3% of companies felt they successfully designed training linked to practical work, 42.3% identified this connection as the primary area needing improvement. Looking ahead, 46.8% of respondents intend to strengthen their training programs by introducing skill diagnostics and assessments to move away from uniform training models toward more personalized development.
