Japan recycled plastics market projected to reach 11.5 million tons by 2034
Japan's recycled plastics market is projected to grow from 9.2 million tons in 2025 to 11.5 million tons by 2034, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.33%, according to a report by IMARC Group.
The growth is driven by a $6.3 billion circular economy action plan and new government regulations. Starting in January 2026, PET beverage bottles sold in Japan must contain at least 15% recycled plastic by weight to receive official certification. Additionally, from April 2026, manufacturers will be required to create and report plans for the use of recycled plastics, with mandatory recycled content levels for products like bottles expected to be phased in by fiscal year 2028.
Japan currently maintains a highly sophisticated collection and processing ecosystem, with a high recovery rate for plastic waste. While much of the historical recycling has focused on thermal recycling, recent efforts are shifting toward material and chemical recycling. Major petrochemical companies, including ENEOS Holdings, Sumitomo Chemical, and Mitsui Chemicals, are investing in chemical recycling technologies to convert plastic waste into high-quality monomers or raw materials.
