Japan regional initiatives address school refusal and hikikomori

Various regional initiatives in Japan are addressing school refusal and social withdrawal (hikikomori).

In Fukuoka City, the Board of Education, in collaboration with the NPO ‘Fukoukou Support Net’, is launching a six-part training course for supporters. Running from September through February 2027, the program aims to teach parents, educators, and community welfare commissioners practical methods for listening to and accepting children facing school refusal. The course is designed for those with personal experience or professional interest in supporting these students.

In Kameoka City, Kyoto Prefecture, a lecture was held focusing on independence for those experiencing school refusal and hikikomori. The session addressed psychological factors such as perfectionism and sensitivity to negative evaluations, exploring ways to support youth through agricultural and employment experiences.
