Japan regional initiatives target nuclear energy and data centers

In Japan, regional authorities are pursuing new economic strategies centered around nuclear energy infrastructure.

In Fukui Prefecture, the Co-Creation Council has added the recruitment of large-scale data centers to its official roadmap. The initiative aims to create an industrial cluster by utilizing electricity generated from local nuclear power plants for direct supply to data centers. This strategy is intended to combat population decline and industrial stagnation by attracting AI-related technologies and infrastructure companies, thereby increasing tax revenue and job creation.

Meanwhile, Aomori Prefecture has announced the first Nuclear-Related Business Fair, scheduled for November 11, 2026, in Mutsu City. The event is designed to facilitate information exchange between nuclear operators and local companies in sectors such as construction, electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing. The goal is to expand the market share of local businesses within the nuclear energy field and encourage new industry entrants to foster regional employment.
