Japan regional minimum wage updates: Akita increases rate while Okinawa negotiations stall

In Akita Prefecture, the local minimum wage council has recommended increasing the hourly minimum wage to 1,090 yen, an increase of 59 yen from the current rate of 1,031 yen. This recommendation has been submitted to the Akita Labor Bureau and is expected to take effect as early as October 14, following formal procedures and potential objections.

Meanwhile, in Okinawa Prefecture, discussions regarding the minimum wage remain unresolved. During the eighth specialized subcommittee meeting held in Naha, labor and management representatives maintained opposing views, leaving a 6-yen gap in their proposals. Further adjustments are scheduled for August 25.
