Japan regional teacher recruitment shows varying results in Kyoto and Ehime

Regional boards of education in Japan are reporting challenges in teacher recruitment for the 2027 academic year.

In Ehime Prefecture, the Board of Education announced that 483 candidates passed the first-term second stage of the selection process. This figure is close to the total recruitment target of approximately 488 people. The successful candidates include 172 elementary school teachers, 167 junior high school teachers, 107 prefectural school teachers, 33 special needs teachers, and 4 nutrition teachers.

In Kyoto, the situation highlights ongoing recruitment difficulties. The Kyoto Prefectural Board of Education reported a passing ratio of 2.5, which ties the historical low recorded since 1995. While the Kyoto City Board of Education saw a slightly higher ratio of 3.1, the total number of successful candidates fell below the city's planned recruitment quota.
