Japan reports multiple bear sightings across several prefectures
Multiple regions across Japan have reported a surge in bear sightings, prompting local authorities to issue safety warnings for residents and tourists.
In Yamanashi Prefecture, a bear was spotted near Fujihokuroku Park in Fujiyoshida City. Local officials used fireworks and car horns to deter the animal, while patrols were conducted by the local hunting association.
In Yamagata Prefecture, four separate sightings occurred in residential areas of Sakata City between the night of September 17 and the morning of September 18. Police have increased patrols during school dismissal hours to protect students.
Other reports include sightings in Fujimi Town, Nagano Prefecture, where a bear was seen near residential homes, and in Fukushima Prefecture, where an animal was spotted near a guardrail in Tanagura Town. Additionally, authorities in Hachioji, Tokyo, warned hikers after a black bear was captured on camera near the popular Trail 1 of Mount Takao.
Local governments are advising citizens to secure their homes, use bear bells when hiking, and remain vigilant in areas where sightings have been confirmed.
