Japan requests record 143 trillion yen budget for fiscal 2027
The Ministry of Finance has announced a total budget request of 143.06 trillion yen for the 2027 fiscal year, marking the fourth consecutive year of record-breaking requests. A significant portion of this, approximately 12.17 trillion yen, is allocated to a growth investment framework aimed at fostering a ‘strong and prosperous Japan.’
While the scale of the budget has raised concerns in financial markets regarding expansionary fiscal policies, some economic analysis suggests that Japan's fiscal stability may depend on maintaining a nominal GDP growth rate. Under certain growth scenarios, even if effective interest rates rise, the net interest payments—factoring in interest earned on government assets like US Treasuries—could remain below the nominal growth rate through 2040. This would satisfy the ‘r < g’ condition, potentially preventing a debt crisis, though it may necessitate sustained inflation to manage the debt burden.
