Japan retains coach Hajime Moriyasu for third term as Korean legend urges his hire

The Japan Football Association’s technical committee confirmed on 22 May that head coach Hajime Moriyasu will continue into a third term, pending approval by the board on 23 May. The committee highlighted his ability to maximise player performance and guide long‑term growth, noting his role in leading Japan to the 32‑team World Cup and that he will remain in charge through the Asian Cup in January. After the tournament, the current U‑21 coach Gō Ōiwa is expected to take over the senior side.

Separately, former South Korean goalkeeper Kim Yong‑gang called for the Korean national team to recruit Moriyasu after the resignation of coach Hong Myeong‑bo. The former player praised Moriyasu’s experience across youth and senior levels and argued that Korea should set aside pride to benefit from his expertise, though no official approach has been made.
