Japan household finances face pressure from inflation and stagnant income
Recent data highlights significant financial strain on Japanese households due to rising prices and stagnant incomes. According to a survey by Sumitomo Life, over 80% of respondents report that inflation is impacting their finances, with 71.8% stating their annual income is not keeping pace with rising costs. Many are cutting expenses, primarily in food, daily necessities, and electricity.
A Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare survey indicates that 55.4% of households feel their living situation is “difficult,” with particularly high pressure on households with children (61.5%) and single-mother households (82.1%).
Financial experts suggest that rather than indiscriminate cutting, which can lower quality of life, individuals should focus on structuring household finances to match their income. For retirees, this involves budgeting for both necessities and small joys, such as daily coffee, by first securing funds for irregular expenses like medical care or home repairs. Additionally, long-term wealth building through tools like the New NISA is being analyzed as a potential path to significant assets through compound interest, though market volatility remains a factor.
