Japan rice ball trends feature specialty shops and new convenience store releases

Various rice ball (omusubi) offerings are gaining attention in Japan, ranging from specialized local shops to convenience store releases.

In Fukuoka City, the specialty shop ‘Omusubi OTOMO’ has released its top five most popular menu items based on September 2026 sales. The top-ranked item is the Egg Yolk and Chicken Soboro with Yuzu Kosho, followed by Silver Salmon with Mentaiko and Sesame Oil. Other popular combinations include Fried Chicken with Homemade Mayo-Kocha and Pork Miso with Green Onion and Red Ginger.

On the retail side, FamilyMart has introduced a ‘Takana Takuan Omusubi’ available across multiple regions including Hokkaido, Kanto, and Kyushu. Released in late September 2026, the 158-yen rice ball features a combination of pickled mustard greens (takana) and crunchy pickled radish (takuan).
