Japan ryokan sector faces rising debt costs amid interest rate shifts
Rising interest rates are impacting the management of traditional Japanese inns (ryokan). While policy rate increases do not cause an immediate surge in interest payments due to the prevalence of low-interest fixed loans and pandemic-era relief programs, the financial landscape is shifting.
As existing debt is repaid and new capital is required for equipment or operations, market rates are increasingly applied. It is anticipated that the average interest rate on total interest-bearing debt will gradually rise to two or three times current levels as older, low-interest loans are replaced.
