Japan schools expand sunglasses use for UV protection

Educational institutions in Japan are increasingly allowing students to wear sunglasses to protect against rising ultraviolet radiation. At Keisei High School in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, a pilot program has launched in collaboration with eyewear retailer Zoff. Fifty-one students are participating as monitors to test the effectiveness and comfort of sunglasses during commutes and outdoor classes, with the goal of potentially implementing full-scale use next year.

This trend is also visible in sports, such as high school baseball. Following a relaxation of regulations by the Japan High School Baseball Federation, players at schools like Shimotsuma Daini High School are using sunglasses to reduce eye fatigue and improve visibility during intense sunlight.

Experts note that children's eyes are particularly susceptible to harmful rays, which can increase the long-term risk of cataracts and other eye diseases. Data from the Japan Meteorological Agency shows a significant increase in high UV index days, highlighting the growing need for preventative measures against sun exposure.
