Japan seeks foreign bank loans for $33 billion U.S. gas power projects
Japan is exploring financing from foreign lenders, including JPMorgan Chase, to fund about $33 billion in natural‑gas‑fired power plants in Pennsylvania and Texas. The loans would be dollar‑denominated, with possible guarantees from the export‑credit agency NEXI and additional backing from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC).
The financing is part of Japan’s larger $550 billion pledge to invest in the United States, of which only roughly $2.2 billion has been deployed so far. By securing foreign‑bank funding, Japan aims to bridge the gap between the pledged amount and the near‑term financing needs of the U.S. projects.
