Japan seeks to bolster Asian energy security and oil reserves

Japan is advancing regional energy security initiatives through the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) and the proposed Partnership on Wide Energy and Resources Resilience (POWERR Asia). Industry Minister Ryosei Akazawa announced plans to use AZEC meetings to coordinate action plans with Asian nations to increase regional oil reserves.

To mitigate supply risks caused by Middle East instability, Japan aims to act as a hub connecting Gulf producers with Asian consumers. This includes scheduled meetings with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to boost cooperation. The POWERR Asia initiative is supported by a planned 1.5 trillion Japanese yen ($10 billion) package designed to help Asian countries bolster oil stocks and protect against supply disruptions.

Beyond fossil fuels, the AZEC framework focuses on achieving net-zero emissions through diverse pathways, aiming to balance decarbonization, economic growth, and energy security. The initiative seeks to foster inclusive partnerships and transparent institutional systems to mobilize private investment across the region.
