Japan sees cautious AI uptake in advertising and consumer use

A survey by advertising firm BOTANICO of its ten Japanese clients found that only 20% are already using AI for ad operations or would like to, while the remaining 80% express caution over accuracy, budget control, creative judgment and overall impact. The firm suggests a hybrid model where AI assists analysis and reporting while human marketers retain strategic decisions.

A separate nationwide study by QO of 30,000 Japanese respondents shows that 33% currently use generative AI services such as chatbots and image generators. Usage is highest among women aged 15‑19 (65%) and lowest among women in their 70s (13%). Most users employ AI daily or weekly for quick information lookup (66%), work tasks (40%) and casual conversation (37%). The research highlights four psychological dimensions that shape how people relate to AI, ranging from seeing AI as a tool to attributing personality to it. Both surveys indicate that AI adoption in Japan remains in an early, cautious phase across business and everyday life.
