Japan senior well-being: Challenges in purpose, health, and finance

As Japan enters the ‘100-year life era,’ recent data and expert insights highlight the challenges facing the senior population regarding purpose, finances, and health.

A recent survey reveals a significant social issue: approximately one in three individuals in their 60s and 70s report having no sense of purpose in life. This lack of fulfillment is largely driven by anxieties surrounding financial stability and declining health.

To combat these issues, experts suggest several strategies for a fulfilling later life. Financial consultant Taiki Yorifuji recommends using specific withdrawal methods—such as fixed-rate or fixed-amount strategies—to manage assets effectively while prioritizing spending on high-happiness activities.

Regarding social connection, manga artist Kenshi Hiromane advises that seniors in their 60s should focus on listening rather than speaking to maintain positive relationships and avoid isolation. Additionally, former Sony executive Shiro Koriyama emphasizes the importance of personal agency, suggesting that the ability to make independent decisions is a major advantage for retirees in achieving happiness.
