Japan sets targets to replace nuclear reactors through 2050s

The Japanese government has established new targets to replace up to five nuclear reactors by the 2040s and as many as 14 by the 2050s. This revision of nuclear energy policy guidelines marks the first time specific numerical replacement targets have been set since the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster.

In its updated policy, the government reaffirmed a commitment to the “maximum use” of nuclear power to encourage industrial investment and develop a skilled workforce. The new approach is more proactive than previous 2023 guidelines, which focused on extending the operating life of existing facilities beyond the standard 60-year limit.

Industry leaders, including Nozomu Mori, chairman of the Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan, have welcomed the decision as a significant step toward long-term energy utilization. Some utilities are already preparing for this shift; Kansai Electric Power Co. has begun geological surveys for potential new construction at the Mihama plant, while other proposals suggest new reactors at the Sendai plant.
