Japan shifts Indo-Pacific policy toward military and tech support

Japan is shifting its foreign policy paradigm in the Indo-Pacific under the leadership of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. The new Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) guidelines move beyond traditional financial support to provide direct infrastructure, surveillance technology, and military resources to strategic allies in the region.

In a related development regarding regional security, the Innovation Party of Japan (JIP) has proposed strengthening defense cooperation with Taiwan. During a visit to Taipei, JIP officials met with President William Lai to discuss developing advanced technologies, such as drones and space systems, to address modern conflict challenges. This push for cooperation aims to build resilient supply chains among democratic partners.

These shifts occur amid heightened regional tensions. Prime Minister Takaichi has previously suggested that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could threaten Japan's survival, potentially justifying intervention by the Self-Defense Forces. In response to these geopolitical dynamics, ASEAN has formulated the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) to maintain regional stability and balance strategic pressures.
