Japan Shinkansen introduces premium ‘solitude seats’ for privacy
JR Central and JR West have introduced the ‘S WorkP’ seat option on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines, specifically on Nozomi, Hikari, and Kodama trains. Dubbed the ‘solitude seat’ by netizens, the service targets business travelers and solo passengers seeking increased privacy and space.
The configuration involves blocking off the middle B seat in a standard three-person row and replacing it with a partition and a drink holder. This modification provides passengers in the adjacent A and C seats with 1.5 times more personal space. The seats are equipped with specialized features including a sliding slanted tabletop designed for laptop use and restrictions on the recline angle of the seat in front to prevent workspace compression.
Additionally, these S Work carriages on N700S trains offer ‘S Wi-Fi for Biz,’ which provides double the transmission capacity of standard free Shinkansen Wi-Fi. While the upgrade fee was originally 1,200 yen, the price will increase to 2,000 yen starting May 15, 2025, as the service expands to online bookings, reserved seat machines, and station windows.
