Japan signs contract for Ukrainian SkyFall interceptor drones

The Japanese Ministry of Defense has signed a contract to acquire interceptor drones from the Ukrainian manufacturer SkyFall. Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi confirmed the transaction, noting that Japan is among the first non-European nations to order these specific devices designed to down attacking drones.

While the specific model, quantity, cost, and delivery schedule were not disclosed, Koizumi stated that authorities are working to secure deliveries “as soon as possible” to meet security requirements. He also highlighted the rapid innovation cycle in Ukraine, where updated drone models are deployed every two to three weeks based on battlefield feedback.

SkyFall produces the P1-SUN family of interceptors, which are compact, high-speed drones used to neutralize Shahed-type attack drones. The company reported that over 3,500 Shahed drones have been intercepted using the P1-SUN system over a six-month period. A newer variant, the P1-SUN JetKiller, is designed to target jet-propelled drones. This model can reach speeds of 370 km/h, operates at altitudes up to 9,000 meters, and features AI-driven target acquisition and day/night camera capabilities.
