Japan single-person household savings median reaches 1 million yen

Data from the 2025 survey by the Japan Financial Intelligence Center (J-FLEC) reveals significant disparities in financial assets among single-person households in Japan. For individuals in their 30s and 40s, while the average savings are 5.01 million yen and 8.59 million yen respectively, the median value for both age groups sits at 1 million yen.

Approximately 32% of single individuals in these age brackets do not hold any financial assets. Experts suggest that for those utilizing the New NISA (Nippon Individual Savings Account) system, it is possible to manage funds by separating money intended for immediate use from long-term investments, as partial withdrawals do not necessitate stopping the accumulation process.

In Nagasaki, a seminar led by financial advisor Akari Doi is scheduled for October 2026 to educate residents aged 40 to 60 on effective NISA utilization and retirement planning.
