Japan surveys reveal trends in second partnerships and marriage expectations
Recent surveys in Japan highlight evolving attitudes toward relationships and marriage criteria among adults.
A study by Gekko Co., Ltd. regarding ‘second partnerships’—emotional connections outside of marriage—found that 44.6% of respondents hold a positive view of the concept. Among those with a ‘very good impression,’ 89.7% expressed interest in using services to find such emotional support. Notably, 31.5% of respondents remained undecided, suggesting a need for better information regarding the nature of these relationships.
Separately, a survey by ZWEI regarding marriage preferences revealed gender disparities in economic expectations. Approximately 73.2% of women surveyed requested a partner with an annual income of at least 4 million yen, with many prioritizing economic stability. In contrast, about 60% of men reported having no specific income requirement. While women placed a high value on professional stability, men showed a preference for occupations that offer a stable lifestyle rhythm and specialized skills.
