Japan targets 10 million AI robot deployment by 2040
Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has announced an ambitious national goal to deploy 10 million AI-driven robots across the country by 2040. This initiative aims to combat severe labor shortages caused by a rapidly aging population and declining birth rates.
The strategy focuses on transitioning from traditional industrial robotics to ‘Physical AI’—systems that combine large language models with physical sensors to operate in unstructured environments. The deployment will target 18 core sectors, including medical care, food manufacturing, retail, and logistics.
A national-level AI platform named ‘Noetra’ has been established, bringing together industry giants such as SoftBank, NEC, Sony, and Honda to develop the necessary infrastructure. Key challenges for the rollout include bridging the ‘trust gap’ in human-robot interaction, particularly in elderly care, and establishing robust regulatory frameworks to protect sensitive personal health data and ensure cybersecurity.
