Japan to study blockchain settlement for stocks and bonds
Japan is planning to overhaul its financial market infrastructure by implementing a blockchain-based settlement system for stocks and government bonds. According to reports, the Financial Services Agency, the Ministry of Finance, and the Bank of Japan, alongside private financial institutions, intend to establish a study group this summer to examine the proposal.
The initiative aims to enable 24/7 near-instant settlement, significantly reducing the current delays where stocks settle on a T+2 basis and government bonds on a T+1 basis. A central component of the plan involves tokenizing Bank of Japan current account deposits to facilitate interbank settlements on a distributed ledger.
The study group is expected to formulate a detailed development plan by early 2027. If approved, the new infrastructure could become operational in the early 2030s. This move is seen as a strategic effort to maintain the competitiveness of Japan's financial markets amidst global shifts toward digital asset integration.
