Japan teachers face disciplinary action and prison for misconduct

Two separate incidents involving misconduct by teachers in Japan have drawn significant attention.

In Gunma Prefecture, the Prefectural Board of Education dismissed a male teacher in his 20s after he admitted to urinating in a student's water bottle. The incident occurred on May 28, and the teacher claimed the act was spontaneous rather than targeted at a specific student. While a settlement was reached, the student has reported mental distress and physical illness, leading to difficulties attending school. The teacher has been referred to prosecutors on suspicion of property damage.

In a separate case, the Hiroshima District Court sentenced former elementary school teacher Kenwo Nakajima to nine years in prison for the sexual abuse of 34 female students. Between January 2023 and June 2025, Nakajima engaged in various acts of non-consensual indecency and unauthorized filming. Although the prosecution sought a 13-year sentence, the court cited the defendant's payment of compensation to victims and his intent to undergo treatment as mitigating factors. The sentence has sparked public outcry regarding its perceived leniency given the scale and duration of the crimes.
