Japan tests advanced robotics in logistics and transit
Various Japanese companies are conducting pilot programs to integrate advanced robotics into logistics and public spaces.
Yazaki Corporation, Cuebus, and Yamazen have launched demonstration experiments for ‘CUEBUS’, an urban multi-dimensional robot warehouse system using linear motor technology. Located at the Innovation Hub-REN in Susono, Shizuoka, the project tests high-density storage, high-speed transport, and the coordination between the warehouse system and autonomous humanoid robots powered by physical AI. The goal is to optimize inventory management and reduce movement loss in manufacturing and logistics.
Separately, JR East has begun testing mobile trash bin robots within the underground concourses of Shinjuku Station. Developed by Cartken and operated by Mitsubishi Electric and Melco Mobility Solutions, these autonomous robots navigate programmed routes to improve cleaning efficiency and assist passengers, particularly tourists, in locating waste disposal. The trials aim to evaluate safety sensors, navigation in crowded environments, and social acceptance in one of Japan’s busiest transit hubs.
