Japan tests drone technology for orchard fertilization and coastal waste removal

Various regions in Japan are conducting pilot programs to utilize drone technology for labor reduction and environmental management.

In Wakayama Prefecture, a collaborative effort between the prefecture and private companies OPTiM Inc. and OAT Agrio Co., Ltd. has led to the development of drone-based fertilization techniques for fruit orchards. During a demonstration in Minabe Town, large drones were used to disperse granular fertilizer over plum trees. This technology aims to reduce the heavy physical burden on farmers working on steep slopes, where transporting fertilizer manually is difficult. Data suggests that drone fertilization provides tree growth and soil composition results comparable to manual methods while significantly reducing labor time.

In Yamagata Prefecture, a demonstration was held at Misaki Coast in Yuza Town to test drones for transporting washed-up marine debris. The project, involving the NGO Partnership Office and supported by the Ministry of the Environment, successfully moved approximately 525 kilograms of waste. The drones were used to carry heavy bags from difficult-to-reach areas, such as beneath cliffs, to accessible locations near Route 7. This initiative aims to improve the efficiency and safety of coastal cleanups in terrains that are challenging for human workers to navigate.
