Japan tests hands-free wireless payments for public transit
Japan is advancing new technologies to streamline public transportation payments. Starting in autumn 2026, companies including JCB will begin demonstration experiments for “hands-free payment” using Ultra-Wideband (UWB) wireless technology. This system allows users to pay fares automatically by simply walking through gates or onto vehicles, as the technology can precisely locate smartphones even when they are in pockets or bags. JR East also plans to conduct similar wireless technology trials near Shinagawa Station in spring 2027.
Separately, Nishi-Nippon Railroad (Nishitetsu) announced plans to introduce credit card touch payments across its entire fleet of approximately 1,300 buses in the Fukuoka metropolitan area by fiscal year 2028. This move aims to improve convenience for both local commuters and inbound tourists who prefer using international credit cards.
