Japan tests new Type 25 long-range anti-ship missiles
During the Keen Sword 27 military exercises, the Japan Self-Defense Forces deployed the new Type 25 anti-ship missile system at the Onohara training range in Nagasaki Prefecture. This system is an upgraded land-to-sea version of the Type 12 missile, manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, featuring a significantly increased range of approximately 1,000 kilometers compared to the original 200-kilometer range.
The exercises, which run from October 19 to 29, represent a major joint maneuver involving approximately 45,000 Japanese personnel and 12,000 U.S. troops, alongside forces from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and the Philippines.
The deployment of the Type 25 is part of Japan's updated 2022 national security strategy, which emphasizes counterstrike capabilities. Because the mobile launchers rely on external sensors for over-the-horizon targeting, training focused on receiving and processing data from various platforms, including U.S. forces, prior to engagement. This capability allows units stationed in Kyushu to reach targets across the East China Sea.
