Chestnuts: Nutritional benefits and preparation tips
Chestnuts are a nutrient-dense seasonal food providing fiber, vitamin C, B vitamins, potassium, and antioxidants. They are particularly beneficial for cardiovascular health due to their potassium content, which helps regulate blood pressure, and their antioxidant profile including gallic and ellagic acids.
To prepare chestnuts, it is recommended to score the shell with an X-shaped cut to prevent them from bursting during cooking. For roasting, preheat an oven to 200 degrees Celsius and bake for 20 to 30 minutes. For boiling, cook scored chestnuts in water for approximately 20 to 30 minutes until soft. A key tip for easier peeling is to remove the shells while the chestnuts are still warm, as the inner membrane adheres more firmly once cooled.
