Japan to centralize intelligence with new National Intelligence Office

Japan is establishing a new National Intelligence Office to centralize its intelligence operations, moving away from a fragmented system previously managed by the Intelligence Cabinet and the Research Office. The new agency will have a budget of 360 million euros and is designed to oversee all relevant departments, reporting directly to the government.

To bolster its capabilities, the office plans to recruit computer engineers, cybersecurity analysts, and foreign liaisons starting next year. The initiative aims to address modern threats such as advanced technology leaks, cyberattacks on public and private sectors, and foreign disinformation campaigns. The United States is currently providing advisory support in areas including cyber defense, industrial espionage, and spy detection.

Sanae Takaichi has emphasized that strengthening national intelligence is essential for protecting national interests and ensuring public security. This move represents a significant shift in Japan's security posture, drawing comparisons to the structures of the CIA and MI6.
