Japan to deploy 10,000 police for Asian Games opening

Japan's national police have announced the mobilization of approximately 10,000 officers to secure the opening ceremony of the Asian Games in Nagoya. The ceremony is scheduled for September 19 at a track and field stadium, with Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako expected to attend.

Of the total force, about 3,100 officers will be specialized units dispatched from across the country. Security measures include the enforcement of a recently passed law that establishes a drone no-fly zone within a one-kilometer radius of the ceremony venue and the imperial couple's accommodations. This marks the first application of the revised law for an event attended by the Emperor.

To mitigate potential lone-wolf terrorist attacks, authorities will establish an intelligence center on Monday to monitor social media for threats, utilizing artificial intelligence to assist in security efforts. The games, which Japan is hosting for the first time since 1994, will primarily take place in Aichi Prefecture and run until October 4. Participating nations include North Korea and Iran. Additionally, police will coordinate with the Japan Coast Guard to enhance vigilance, as athletes are scheduled to stay on a cruise ship docked at the Port of Nagoya.
