Japan to grant Nepal 2.853 billion yen for airport upgrades
The Government of Japan has agreed to provide a grant of 2.853 billion yen (approximately 2.767 billion NPR) to Nepal for the improvement of air traffic control facilities at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA). The agreement was formalized through the signing of an Exchange of Notes by Japanese Ambassador Maeda Toru and Nepalese Finance Secretary Ghanshyam Upadhyaya.
The project aims to modernize the aging control tower and critical infrastructure, including power, HVAC, fire protection, and security systems. Additionally, communication, navigation, and surveillance systems will be upgraded to meet International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. The initiative also includes training to strengthen the operation and maintenance capacity of local authorities.
These upgrades are intended to enhance aviation safety, improve traffic management efficiency, and bolster disaster resilience for Nepal’s primary international gateway. The project coincides with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Nepal.
