Japan to implement widespread price hikes and labor reforms in October 2026
Starting in October 2026, Japan will see significant changes affecting consumer prices, taxation, and labor regulations. A survey by Teikoku Databank indicates that over 3,000 food and beverage items are scheduled for price increases due to rising raw material, logistics, and energy costs. Notable examples include price revisions for Ezaki Glico products and Starbucks Coffee Japan beverages.
In addition to food costs, Tokyo Gas will revise its gas rates, and the liquor tax will be unified for beer-based beverages at 54.25 yen per 350ml. This change will lower taxes for beer while increasing them for certain low-malt beers and other sparkling alcoholic beverages.
Labor laws will also undergo major shifts. The wage requirement of approximately 1.06 million yen per year for social insurance enrollment will be abolished. Furthermore, companies will be legally obligated to implement measures against customer harassment and prevent sexual harassment toward job seekers. Changes to the ‘equal pay for equal work’ principle will also take effect, requiring clearer explanations of treatment differences between regular and non-regular employees.
