Japan to launch Disaster Management Agency on November 2

Disaster Management Agency Goshi Hosono Nankai Trough earthquake disaster preparedness Japan

Japan is set to establish the Disaster Management Agency on November 2, a new central body designed to coordinate disaster response from prevention to recovery. Disaster Management Minister Goshi Hosono stated that the agency's primary mission is to address national-scale crises, such as the Nankai Trough earthquake, a major Tokyo metropolitan earthquake, and potential Mount Fuji eruptions.

On its first day, the agency plans to issue an emergency request to the public, central ministries, and local governments to strengthen disaster preparedness. Minister Hosono has urged citizens to stockpile at least three days, and ideally one week, of food, water, and toilet supplies to ensure self-sufficiency when public aid may be delayed.

The agency also aims to improve evacuation center conditions by transitioning from the standard 'TKB' (toilet, kitchen, bed) model to 'TKBB', which includes baths. Furthermore, the government plans to increase the number of professional disaster-response volunteers by fostering partnerships with corporations and organizations to support local municipalities during emergencies.
