Japan to prioritize AI and drones in new defense strategy

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has identified artificial intelligence and unmanned defense systems as central pillars of the nation's upcoming defense strategy. Speaking to high-ranking officials of the Japan Self-Defense Forces, Takaichi emphasized the need to accelerate the integration of these technologies, noting that they evolve at a much faster pace than traditional military equipment.

The government is currently reviewing three key national security documents, which were last updated in 2022. This accelerated revision aims to address an increasingly complex security environment in the Indo-Pacific, specifically citing challenges posed by China and North Korea. The Ministry of Defense has requested a record budget of 8.89 trillion yen (approximately 55 billion USD) for the 2027 fiscal year to support these advancements, including the development of low-cost attack drones and AI-integrated command structures.

This strategic shift follows recent moves by the Japanese government to authorize lethal weapon exports to allies and strengthen long-range missile capabilities. The administration maintains that these updates are necessary to ensure long-term peace and protect citizens in a changing global landscape.
